Code mixing is the change of one language to another within the same utterance or in the same oral/written text. It is a common phenomenon in socities in which two or more languages are uses, usually without a change of topic. Code mixing can be classified into two kinds.
1. Inner code mixing. We only change our word or phrase in vernacular (bahasa daerah). For example
This morning I hantar my baby tu dekat babysitter tu lah
2. Outer code mixing.
Change into foreign language.
Code switching is switching situation from one code to another (Suwito, 1985: 68). Code switching not only occurs in the form of language change but alsoay happen in the change of the varoant of language.
Why people are using code mixing and code switching?
1. Talking about a particular topic.
2. Expressing group identify
3. For prestige
4. To exclude other people when a comment is intended for only a limited audience.
5. Rival in speaking
6. Time and place in speaking
The different of code mixing and code switching are code mixing only change some word or phrase. But code switching is all sentences.
And how about bilinguals? They are using code mixing or code switching. For children usually using code mixing. But for common people is using code switching.
